National Museum

The National Museum, the most important and the oldest museum in Serbia, founded in 1844, changed its location a few times: from the Captain Misina building, through the Residence of Princess Ljubica and the New Court building to the Republic Square, on which he settled down in 1952. Today's building of the National Museum was built in 1903 as the palace of fund administration, later it became the Mortgage Bank, designed by Belgrade architect N. Nestorovic and A. Stevanovic. At the time when it was built, the building of fund administration was one of the earliest banking facilities in the country, after the building of the National Bank from 1889. The monumentality of the building's main facade was a symmetrical academic solution, which dominated the entrance with coupled columns and a luxurious neo-Baroque dome. It also had polychrome facades with rich decorative plastic of neo-Renaissance origin. The representativeness of the building highlighted the rich ornamental decoration in the interior. Its first extension was made in 1930, when they built the atrium and wing facing the street Laza Pauča. The National Museum's building is a representative example of a public palace in Belgrade architecture of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century and a significant result of the Stevanovic-Nestorovic creative team's work.
