Under the UNESCO protection, the Studenica monastery is one of the greatest and the richest monasteries of the Serbian Orthodox Church. It is located 39 km far from Kraljevo, and was founded by Stefan Nemanja in 1190, later finished by his sons.
Nemanja`s third son St Sava, after making his brothers make peace with each other, transported the relics of St Simeon to the monastery of Studenica where they are today. Under Sava`s guidance the Studenica monastery has become a political, cultural and spiritual centre of medieval Serbia. St Sava wrote Studenica`s Typicon, in which he organized the life of monks in the monastery. He described the life of his father Stefan Nemanja (the Serbian ruler, later the monk and saint St Simeon) in The Hagiography of St Simeon Nemanja, and left the valuable sources of the life of his father.
Studenica was important to other members of the Nemanjic Dynasty. The king Radoslav added one part to the monastery, and the King Milutin built the small church dedicated to the St Joakim and Ana.
